Our Story
Tequilas
Our story began in 1993, the year our family inherited the supervision of the family ranch in the outskirts of Arandas, Jalisco. We are the third generation to farm our ranch, but the first to grow agave, and the first to farm organically. In our little corner of Jalisco, everyone believed that agave would not grow, because the soil was not red as in Arandas, the heart of the Los Altos region of the state. We took this as a challenge, but we also made a commitment. We resolved that we would strive to make the ranch more productive; that we would do so in anenvironmentally conscious manner; and that if we were successful, that we would share our knowledge and experience with other growers to help them improve their productivity. We devised an organic protocol which we based on two things: 1) the natural farming methods of our grandfather, Don Abelino, whose philosophy was, Respect the earth, and it will produce for you and 2) on modern science. We soon began to see the effects in our fields: not only were we able to grow agave where it had never been grown before, but our agaves are now healthier, larger, and of better quality than any agave grown anywhere in Jalisco. Over the ensuing years we used the ranch as an outdoor laboratory to further improve our organic protocol. We also have been using it as an outdoor classroom, where we teach other growers how to make the change from their chemical-intensive farming methods. These methods, whichrely heavily on chemical fertilizers, toxic pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, actually deplete the productivity of the soil until it is rendered useless. It also harms the health of the field workers, and all of these toxic substances filter down into the water table, from which the rural population draws their water for drinking and cooking. This is the direct cause of a rapidly rising incidence of cancers and birth defects. Finally, all of these chemicals also end up in the final product, so the consumer also ingests all of these harmful chemicals. Sadly, this is the case all over Mexico, and all over the world wherever agriculture exists (even in the US).As we worked on our researching, promoting, and teaching, we began to draw the attention of growers further and further away from our immediate area. We saw the need to expand beyond agave, and devised organic protocols specifically tailored for a diverse list of crops. We have also travelled to several states in Mexico; promoting, educating, and training. As examples, we have converted avocado growers in Michoacan, citrus and strawberry growers in Guanajuato, tomato growers in Sinaloa, garlic and chile growers in Zacatecas, and sugar cane growers in Yucatan. AND, all of our teaching is done at no cost to the growers. But we do ask for acommitment from them: once they learn our methods, and see the results in their fields, thenthey must also turn around and teach others. This is the only way that we can multiply ourefforts. The work that we do in Mexico depends on the availability of resources to be able to continue to do our research and teaching. Thus, we needed a very visible product to draw attention to what we can do with organics. This is the reason for the creation of Tequila Alquimia. Alquimia is the vehicle that makes our work possible. The USDA Organic Certification gives official validity to what we do both in the fields as well as in the distillery. Our multiple Gold Medals give us credibility in the industry and further help us to show that by the use of organics, we can create a quality product that is second to none. We are very thankful for all of the support that so many wonderful folks have given our project. The proceeds that result from that support makeit possible for us to continue our work in Mexico. In the US, we also use our product to supportmany community-based organizations via fundraising activities, especially in the areas ofeducation, health care, and social services. With the support that we have been given, and withpeople joining us in our commitment, we are no longer alone. Our efforts are being multiplied, and very soon, we will begin to make a difference, and will make our world a better place.SALUD!
